ORIGINAL SERIES BY SASHA KRAUTMAN
INTERLUDE
In music, an interlude is the composition played between main acts — the in-between chapter.
In this short series of artworks, each piece reflects a certain pause that sounds gentler.
For my own art practice, these works have served as consolidation of my style before another period of growth and expansion that I can feel is coming.
All artworks are created exclusively with coloured pencils, each square meticulously drawn layer by layer, making the process itself slow, and alchemising it into the feeling of stillness and observation that the artworks project.
The borders of the panels are framed with vintage leather that reminds us of how time leaves its marks on objects, materials and surfaces.

The piece evokes a sense of stillness, even through the dynamic composition of the landscape and close up of the stallion’s head. It shows us the same scene from two perspectives: we watch from afar as he stops in the middle of the meadow and brushes his muzzle against the bloom. As we come closer we see his eyes and mane drifting like silk in the invisible mountain breeze and can scent the bloom of forget-me-not's, those tiny gentle blue flowers that grow together forming soft clouds of colour across the field.

This piece was inspired by a photo my friend Eugenia took in the Louvre. She captured on film a female statue, blurred by motion and dissolving into the space around her, making it look like an abstract painting, or a dream. I imagined an artist or a composer watching or imagining her in his daydreaming hour as he slowly sips coffee in his home robe and thinks of the next piece. He prays to her for guidance and ideas and thanks her for leading him on this path.

He walks through the cloudy terrains like a tortured poet, in endless search of that fire. Yet his journey is filled with joy of exploration as he leaps over the sparkling rivers and streams, free and blessed with life.

I’ve lived in Australia for 3 years, and abroad for 8.
Being Russian has never been a significant part of my identity and I always wanted to be a ‘citizen of the world’. But there’s that deep part of my soul that often chooses to play Tschaikovsky over Bach, googles how to buy an original Dostoevsky novel in Sydney, and longs to go see Nutcracker ballet when Christmas decorations begin to pop up all over the city.
To connect to that part of me, to the love of the classic Russian culture, I got inspired to make this piece.
